This concert has the second of two recordings currently circulating from the 1980 T our . The other one is 1980-10-30 Bridge House, London, England, UK. I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead sounds radically different from later live versions and the studio version; you can listen to the entire track on the recording's subpage, linked below. This concert was also the likely debut of the early live-only track Addiction, and this concert is currently the only source for any recording of the track.
Larry Moore, part of the Student Union at Southend College Of T echnology , organised a night of live music on this night. He explained in Jonathan Miller's 'Stripped' biography:
"T op of the bill were 'The Leapers', of whom great things were expected and who were regularly featured in the [Basildon] Evening Echo's music column. 'No. 6' was also on the bill somewhere... Depeche Mode was third from the top of the bill; they were by far the best. After the gig, I was handing out the curry takeaway riders in the sports changing room and I asked Dave Gahan if, as they were so good, they would like to come back and do another gig. Gahan glared at me and said that they would, but only if they were the headline act. 'Huh', I snorted, as I turned away . 'Y ou're not THA T good!' Hence, I became the guy who knocked them back as not good enough to headline Southend College. I think I had a point!"
Daryl Bamonte said on Facebook (see right):
And through faded memories, I seem to remember "Addiction" being showcased at Southend College 1 1/80 but I might be wrong.
According to fan Ian Harding who attended the concert, it was a band called 'The Regulators' who headlined, and his ticket stub says the same.

Dave forgot a line during Ice Machine. This recording is currently the only source for the track Addiction, sometimes referred to as "Closer", "Closer All The Time", or "Ghost Of Modern Time".
This concert:
- is the 19th concert of Depeche Mode / Composition Of Sound
- is the 16th concert with Dave Gahan in the band
- is the 8th concert under the name "Depeche Mode"
- is the 1st performance of Just Can't Get Enough, with a different intro and melody . Dave dedicates the track to Jo, his girlfriend at the time.
- is currently the only source of a recording for the early live-only track Addiction, possibly the track's first live performance as well

- has the return of T ora! T ora! T ora! since October 30, 1980 at the Bridge House
- ends with Ice Machine, clearly a popular track in those days as the audience is cheering for the track while Dave is introducing it.
