1988-06-18 KROQ, Los Angeles, CA, USA (A Concert For The Masses) broadcast
This is the "A Concert For The Masses" broadcast. KROQ was broadcasting live from the Rose Bowl the entire day. This consists of on stage introductions, interviews with all the acts on the bill (Wire, Thomas Dolby , O.M.D. and Depeche Mode), and the KROQ DJ's. This broadcast gives an alternate perspective to this show, which would become the 101 show. It was also the 10th Birthday Concert for KROQ. DJ's and KROQ staff heard on this broadcast include Richard Blade, Jed The Fish, Ramondo, Swedish Egil, Doc On The Roq, Lewis Largent, Rodney Bingenheimer , Dusty Street, Scott Mason and the late Rick Carroll (the then-program director of KROQ).
Thomas Dolby said right after his performance in this broadcast: "It was a blast, actually . It was the most fun I've had since Live Aid, which was about 105.000 people. [This concert] is certainly among the biggest [concerts that I've played]. Actually , I think that, after Wembley stadium, this was like, "I like intimate, little gigs, you know? Just 70.000 people...""
Paul Humphreys, also right after OMD's concert: "Well, it was an amazing show. It really was amazing. I mean, to have like, 65.000 or 70.000 people, I don't know how many are out there, going crazy , it was just a great experience, because it was our biggest show that we've done in America so far . It was great to see the crowd go so wild. I mean, it's really hard to get up there without any kind of lights, because it was daylight throughout our entire show. And to get up there and and so that, without any lights at all, just with the music, it was great to be able to do that. It was pretty hot but I was too hassled to even notice how hot it was out there. I mean, we walked out there on stage, and we got loads of computers up there and there had been a spike down the mains, and all the computers were all messed up, all our programs were all wiped, so for the first four or five numbers, myself and Martin, the other keyboard player , were just living on our nerves, trying to programme up, and we're busking parts on different keyboards, till we managed to get the old programme run back up again! By the time we hit "If Y ou Leave" [the old programme ran back up again]. Myself and Martin were programming back up again for the whole show, so we were really busking it there, for a while!"
