The incriminating evidence of the Fan Club's (successful) attempt to fix the 1990 Brit Awards: a letter urging all fans to take part in a multiple voting scam!
Dear Fanclub member
This is your chance to help Depeche Mode win an award in the 1990 BRIT Awards. The information below is secret, because we're not really supposed to do things like this, so no telling the BBC or Radio One! [1]
The awards for Best Video By A British Artist and Best Single By A British Artist are to be voted by the general public (ie: you and me!) and Depeche Mode's single 'ENJOY THE SILENCE' has been nominated in both categories.
To vote for the video award, all you need to do is watch the BBC's 'GOING LIVE!' programme on Saturday 2nd February. They'll broadcast ten videos (including, of course, 'ENJOY THE SILENCE') and each video will be followed by a telephone number to call to register your vote. You can vote as many times as you want to. So, when you hear the recorded message, your vote has been registered, hang up and re-dial! If you get an engaged signal, please keep trying. The video with the most votes will win the award.
The voting for the Best Single award is slightly more complicated.......From Sunday 3rd February through to Thursday 7th February, Radio One will be playing eight singles a day, a total of forty for the week, with a voting telephone number for each record. The only snag is that we don't know which day 'ENJOY THE SILENCE' will be played. The singles will be played on the Sunday on the DLT Show, and on Simon Mayo's morning show on subsequent days. Again, you can vote as many times as you want - so don't give up! The top two singles from each day will go through to the final on Simon Mayo's show on Friday 8th February, again with a telephone voting system. The single that receives the most votes on the Friday will win the award.
NB: Please make sure that whoever pays the telephone bill in your house knows what you're up to!
Happy Dialling!
