Depeche Mode performed two short rehearsal sets for fans and journalists at Avatar Studios in New Y ork City . This was the first time Corrupt was performed live. In Y our Room was the album version and not the "Zephyr Mix" (single version). World In My Eyes had a new intro. At the end of Barrel Of A Gun, Dave Gahan rapped the lyric 'Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head' from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's song 'The Message'. All songs were sung by Dave.
On March 6th, 15 Depeche Mode fans suddenly reported on social media that they had just attended an unannounced rehearsal by Depeche Mode. They revealed that 20 fans who had signed up for the American tour 'Strobe' ticket pre-sale via Facebook had received an email from Sony Music on March 2nd. Sony had selected them based on their location [NYC] and asked them to arrive (along with a friend) at Sony Music's building on March 6th for a special Depeche Mode event, without specifying any further info. The group of 30 to 40 people waited at Sony Music's building and had to sign a contract and turn in their phones, and then had to hop on a bus which would drive to an unspecified location. That location was Avatar Studios, where Depeche Mode have been rehearsing the past few weeks. During the rehearsal, Depeche Mode would discuss the songs with the fans, and chit-chat. A photo and camera crew recorded the bus drive and the entire rehearsal which will appear on Depeche Mode's social media accounts, but it is not sure if all photo and video material will be made public or just a selection of it. HOME moderator Sean Salo attended the event and wrote an extensive report on it, which you can read here .
Then in the evening, when the fans had hopped on the bus again, Depeche Mode did a second rehearsal for journalists. Three journalists who have revealed to have attended it are The Sun's Jacqui Swift, Daily T elegraph's Neil McCormick, and Rolling Stone USA's Kory Grow. Grow tweeted that they played "mostly classics (Everything Counts, Enjoy the Silence, Personal Jesus, etc.)", as well as "a brilliant cover of Bowie's Heroes with electronic drums and Martin playing guitar ." Unfortunately there is not more info on this second rehearsal.

People are People: NYC-based photographer Jen Maler has uploaded a photo on Instagram showing an invitation card to a special (and unannounced) event. The card lists Sony's NYC office, but Jen says: "just hung out with #depechemode and 25 other people at #avatarstudios while they were rehearsing for their upcoming tour" Lola Staar wrote: "Wow.... that was one of the most incredible experiences of my life! Less then 40 Depeche Mode fans "selected by the band" to win this mystery prize arrived at the Sony building. They took our phones, we boarded a giant tour bus (behind us in this photo) & started driving to an unknown venue, still having no idea what we had won... but knowing it was BIG! A camera crew filmed the whole adventure! Then, we arrived at DEPECHE MODE'S PRIVATE REHEARSAL SPACE! We walked into the gorgeous wood studio & they had a bar & food set up for us! Everyone was hanging out but no band. Then Athena & I went to use the bathroom and we ran into DAVE GAHAN!!!! We were all led into a separate area where the band had already begun to play! The handful of us watched them play a set of new & old classics. Dave was was about two feet away from me as they played. At the end of the set I met him. They were rehearsing for their upcoming tour so at times they would stop & discuss how the song should be played. That was the coolest part about it! We watched the creative process happen as they discussed the songs. It felt like a dream. I still can't believe it was real! There were only 20 winners picked out of thousands (each winner brought a guest). Apparently the band picked based on our Facebook data that they gained access to when we signed up for the presale! So bazaar!" Lola Staar also wrote: "They are going to post photos & video on the Depeche Mode Social media in the next few days!" They played 6 old songs and 2 news songs, including an old song never played live before! They sounded absolutely amazing! We met up at Sony Headquarters, our phones were checked and we were whisked away on a bus (Get on Board!) to a secret location. There was a small reception room off a recording studio where the album was playing, we heard about 3 new songs plus WTR. All tracks sounded like bluesy electronic, mellow. We liked it and danced to the vibe. We were brought into the rehearsal studio with the band right in front of us. I stood a few feet in front of Mart and Dave. We screamed and danced. Dave said a few words to greet us. It was a real rehearsal and everyone made comments to the sound guys during breaks, to raise levels etc. Martin played 4 different guitars and keyboards. Setlist New song Barrel of a Gun A Pain that I'm Used To Corrupt In Your Room (album version! Dave even said, the album version!) World in my Eyes New Song (we think Cover Me seemed like a Dave song) There was a film crew filming us and asking for commentary, they may release a clip in a day or two.
