In the last newsletter we asked you to write approximately 350 words, reviewing any of the Depeche Mode concerts that you attended. There were hundreds of entries received, and we carefully read each of them. The standard of writing was extremely high, and a winner very difficult to pick out. However, we finally picked a winning entry from England, and in a later edition of our news letter we will print an entry from the winning European one. Anyway, here is the winning entry:-

DEPECHE MODE

Firstly, something new, previously unheard, pulsing, full of life, of energy, of power. Something fresh. Later to emerge as "Christmas Island".

Then, recently released "Black Celebration" begins its subtle introduction. A spotlight picks out Dave from behind a black muslin stage drop. As "Black Celebration" begins pounding the cloth drops, the lights flash, the musicians are revealed, the singer wiggles and we're off. Another journey into the unknown ecstasy of a Depeche Mode concert.

Alan stands to the left, clad in leather jacket and faded jeans, looking as unassuming as ever. Martin is in the middle, dressed in leather pants and black see-through top crossed with leather straps. Andy is to the right, hair flattened but jumping up and down as he pogos to the beat, dressed in dark pants and fancy shirt Andy continually acknowledges the crowd's applause.

And what applause! What a crowd! What a following! One thing is for sure - Depeche Mode fans know how to dance. The know how to move, and, no amount of 'bouncers' can sit them down!

The sound is perfect, crystal clear, the loudest possible before becoming distorted. Lights pound to the beat, and, the beat pounds with the lights.

Classics are all included: "Fly on the Windscreen", "Photographic", "Shake the Disease". The concert favourites are here - "People are People", "Everything Counts", "Leave In Silence". Wonders never cease. Depeche Mode are wondrous!

Lights dim and Martin climbs to the steps at the back of the stage. Two from Martin, the classical (and commercially under-rated) "A Question Of Lust" and "It Doesn't Matter Two". Massive applause and the drum beat begins again.

An hour from the beginning of Depeche Mode's performance and almost all the 2,000 strong audience are on their feet moving, chanting, clapping, overwhelmed at the four perfectionists on stage.

Alas, all good things must end, and Depeche Mode leave the stage, but the audience want an encore - two to be precise! "Something To Do", "Boys Say Go", "More Than A Party", and the concert anthem "Just Can't Get Enough", and believe me, we couldn't.

DEPECHE MODE STORY - PART 2.

Then came a year of dazzling achievement. Despite tempting offers from the major companies, Depeche Mode stuck with Daniel Miller and Mute records helping the label to become Britain's most successful Indie. "Dreaming of Me" made the lower reaches of the charts, but "New Life" rose to 11 and then the third single, "Just Can't Get Enough", cracked the Top Ten.

Depeche Mode's first album, "Speak & Spell", was released in October 1981 and quickly made the Top Ten. Then came a short tour of England and part of Europe when, according to The Face, "they proved themselves to be the most danceable pop band on the market."

It was during this time that Vince Clarke realised that he preferred the studio to the road, and left to follow his own creative career, still with Mute Records. The remaining three Modes returned to the studio to record their new single "See You", written by Martin Gore. It was hailed as the best release by the band to date and gave them their highest chart position.

Depeche Mode's first US concerts, at the Ritz in New York, came in 1982 with new member Alan Wilder introduced on synthesizer and additional vocals and preceded a tour of Britain ending with two sold-out concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.

European concerts, TV and radio shows and the release of their fifth single, "The Meaning Of Love", were followed by a very successful two-week tour of the US and Canada before the group returned to England and the recording studio. They spent three months working on their second album, "A Broken Frame", including the sixth single "Leave In Silence", which earned high praise from the critics, including NME's description of 'a wonderful love song'. [3]

Television concerts, the filming of their latest promotional video and the release of their seventh single, "Get The Balance Right", started a busy 1983 for Depeche Mode. In the spring they toured the USA and Canada, then made their first trip to the Far East, including live shows and TV appearances in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Bangkok. The reception was overwhelming, with rioting fans mobbing the group at Tai Kak Airport in Hong Kong and at their concerts.

Next News Letter features the European competition winner, Japanese tour dates. Part 3 of the Depeche Mode story, your questions answered, plus lots more.

Don't forget that you can still obtain the "Black Celebration" tour merchandise from us by Mail order!!!!!!!

[1] - This is the concert from which the live performances on the releases of "A Question Of Time" were taken.
[2] - It's poignant to read this here. It could not have been written long before Karen's tragically early death which contributed to Fletch's mental health problems some years later.
[3] - A shame the public didn't feel the same way. The single bombed at number 18.
