Second Coming
[Metro, 26th April 2006. Words: Andrzej Lubowski.]
Depeche Mode's hugely popular 1990 album Violator features not only the two best songs Depeche Mode ever wrote but two of the best songs anybody ever wrote - the blues-from-hell of Personal Jesus and the glistening, poignant Enjoy The Silence.
Less well remembered, however, is the rest of the record. Anton Corbijn's stark artwork suggests the band in their gloomy pomp Mode but it's a set whose tender heart truly rests in delicate, bleeping ballads such as Waiting For The Night and Sweetest Perfection. Fattened up by this remaster, these intricate backing tracks remind you why Depeche Mode once were considered a genuinely important electronica act.
Dave Gahan's drugs-induced meltdown and the Songs Of Faith And Devotion album were to follow but, for now, the band had crafted an album that deserves to be remembered as the equal of contemporary masterpieces such as New Order's Technique and The Cure's Disintegration.

Short review of Violator for its collectors' edition re-release. Commendably the author looks beyond its two best known singles to the other tracks, but it's very disappointing that he didn't review any of the bonus material a prospective buyer would want to know about.
